Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary: The Legacy of Exotic Wild Animals

The population of Lion-Tailed Macaque declined over the past 50 to 60 years. In 1968, the population of this medium sized well-built monkey was estimated less than a thousand. Then in 1978, the population was about 80, which lived in 55 troops in the Western Ghats. They like to live amidst coffee and tea plantations. Therefore, this endangered species is in the process of making Periyar its permanent home.

Overview

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the 27 renowned project tiger reserves in India, is located in Thekkady, in Idukki district of central Kerala. Incepted in 1934 under the name of ‘Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary’, it was later renamed to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950. The sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978 and then brought under Project Elephant in 1991. An artificial lake, stretching to an area of 26 sq km, is a major attraction of Periyar National Park.

Fauna

An vital element of Kerala tourism, this wildlife sanctuary offers a total of 60 different mammals, 320 categories of birds, 45 species of reptiles, 27 species of amphibians, 38 types of fish and over 160 kinds of insects/butterflies. Animals like elephants, sambars, tigers, gaurs, lion tailed macaques and nilgiri langurs can be easily spotted in the dense greens of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Flora

The entre sanctuary is covered with dense evergreen forests, due to which the moisture content is always high here. In the list of all evergreen or semi-evergreen forests of Periyar wildlife sanctuary, there are 2000 kinds of flowering plants, 3 types of seed plants and 170 species of ferns. These are nurtured by Periyar Lake.

Periyar has so far maintained its natural beauty. The serene atmosphere charms the tourist. Motorboats take you to gorgeous creeks and islands replete with wild elephants, healthy gaurs and shy sambars. One can easily spot elephants swimming from the mainland to the islands, or wild boars roaming together.

According to the officials in Periyar, there were    15 tigers in the sanctuary in 1974, and their number increased to 35 by the end of 1981. But today, you rarely see any of them. Still the lively capers of the elephants in the lake waters are a common sight in Periyar.

The ideal time to visit Periyar is from February to May.

Exotic Animals of Australia – the Land Down Under

The kangaroo is the largest marsupial in the world – it is not unusual for them to reach seven feet high.

Australia’s cuddly koala bear is nearly as well known as the kangaroo, although it isn’t really a bear – it’s a distant relation of the wombat. Koalas are certainly cuddly – in fact, they are probably one of the most docile animals in the world. If you come across a koala bear, chances are that it’s asleep – koalas spend around 80% of their lives asleep and the rest of their time eating.

If you have ever heard the weep of the Kookaburra, you will know why the bird is also known as the laughing jackass. The bird really belongs to the kingfisher family although it eats insects and small reptiles, rather than fish; the reason for its weird laugh? Some people claim the bird is laughing with man, others say it is the bird’s way of warning of terrible weather.

The dingo is a wild dog, which was probably introduced to the continent from South East Asia. Despite their somewhat ferocious reputation, Dingoes are no more perilous than any other domestic breed of dog. Dingoes cannot bark although they make up for it by yelping and howling. Unfortunately, the dingo is dying out due to man encroaching on the wilderness and the practice of interbreeding.

Wallabies are often mistaken for kangaroos – just like kangaroos they can hop and jump. They range in size from just a few inches to nearly six feet long. They can be found all over the country in every kind of habitat – desert, forest and swamp. Wallabies can go a long time without drinking – in fact they can really dig their own wells to locate water.

And perhaps the oddest of Australia’s wondrous creatures is the Emu – the bird that can run quick but cannot glide. Emus are enormous, often standing up to six feet above the ground; they are also a very ancient species, having been around for about 80 million years. The Emu has always been vital to the Aborigines as it provides them with the

two things most vital for them to survive, food and clothing.

Many of these exotic creatures can easily be seen in the wild, although there are also plenty of places throughout Australia where your chances of seeing them are greater. Australia has many natural parks and wildlife sanctuaries, many of which are designated as World Heritage sites. Several companies specialize in tours to the Outback or other parts of the country, offering the chance to observe animals and birds in the company of an experienced guide.
