Less Is Definitely Not More When It Comes To Your Health Information!
Less Is Certainly Not More When It Comes To Your Health Information!
Over the past couple of years I have spent a lot of time doing research in several arenas … one of the things that I have learned is a serious lack in availability of stable medical care. By stable, I mean constant. You know, the doctor that you go to for whatever ails you and who knows you better than you know yourself because they’ve been at the helm of your healthcare for years and years.
Of course, the day of the housecall has long since seen sunset, but if you’re not under the care of a G.P. (general practitioner), then who is making sure you get your annual physical? Who is plotting and plotting to get those middle age tests looked after? And, who has ALL of your medical records.
These days, we are all in a rush and in a society of global mobility, our records are being scattered hither and yon! The walk-in clinic you visited last week has a record of your prescription for that nasty chest cough. And the emergency room that you took your son to after that small soccer incident has the x-ray of his sprained ankle. But does anyone, anywhere have a record of everything … every treatment that has been undertaken … every medication …
In all, one million adults and 130,000 children in Ontario alone don’t have a family doctor. The OMA says the province needs 1,000 general practitioners now. (Hamilton Spectator Nov. 26, 2007) (This number grows exponentially when you look across North America … to a whopping 9.8 million!! – US Govt. Committee on Healthcare, Statistics -June, 2007). Government has, over the past few years, introduced a number of programs to provide more medical care especially to rural settings, but is it enough?
There’s too much room for error with numbers like this staring healthcare in the face … medical error that is! And medical errors cost money and lives!! People’s lives are permanently changed or even finished unnecessarily every day across North America due to the lack of essential information needed for doctors to make informed decisions about our care. The time for change is NOW!
But who needs to make the change exactly? Governments across North America and worldwide are recognizing the need and making funds available to improve communication capabilities in the medical industry. Medical practitionners have long-since noted a gap in the flow of information between facilities, private practices and healthcare providers of all sorts. All of these groups are thoughtfully and positively working toward change, but I would suggest that it is not their sole responsibility.
In fact, I would argue that responsibility is just as much that of the individual as it is their doctors’ and governments’.
So today’s order of business … where is your personal health information right now … right this minute? Do you have it neatly organized and typed on your computer or does only your doctor or medical practitioner know for sure? Maybe there’s a trail of prescriptions dating back to 1985 somewhere in your medicine cabinet?
Here’s the rub folks … you never know when you might need to know about yours or your family’s medical infomation! What if you’re on vacation thousands of miles from your doctor’s office or what if they’re just not available at the time? Even if you’re perfectly healthy, you just never know if something from your past might help you out, right?
Medical information technology is forefront in the new US administration’s mandate and your information is in their sights. Canada is working hard to implement a system for health communication as well. But their systems are still years away. What are you going to do in the meantime?
It’s up to you to take control! Do it! You have both the right and the responsibility to make sure that your health information is accurate, complete and current.
Bottom line … something is always better than nothing. Even if you just take a few minutes to write down life threatening conditions, a small of your medical history and what medications you take regularly, it’s better than leaving things to chance. Emergency contact information is also vital in any personal health record so that healthcare providers can get in touch with someone who knows and cares about you. Keep your notes in your wallet and give a copy to someone who cares about you.
Better yet, make it as comprehensive as you possibly can. The more information you can provide, the less likely it is that an unnecessary medical mistake will affect your life!
It’s time for all of us to take responsibility for our own information in every area of our lives. How else can we really be sure the world has an accurate picture of who we really are?

Angina More Common in Women Than Men
Angina More Common in Women Than Men
Researchers learned the unexpected result in the first large-scale study investigating risk factors for stable angina. They pooled data from 74 studies involving 401,315 people living in 31 countries, including the United States. Of the studies’ participants, 13,331 women and 11,511 men had stable angina.
Compared to men, women develop angina more often in the small vessels of the heart than in the large coronary arteries. Physicians should reconsider how they view stable angina, Hemingway said. “If you reckon that narrowing of the large arteries is the only underlying cause, then that will color your judgment,” he said. “Such narrowing is less common in women than in men. But a woman with typical angina symptoms may still have myocardial ischemia.”
“Doctors and the general public should realize that out there in the real world, men and women experience these symptoms with a similar frequency,” Hemingway said. “When someone sees their doctor with symptoms of angina, the sex of the patient is not the most vital factor.”
Angina is a common and serious heart problem. It’s caused by inadequate oxygen to the heart, which can lead to chest pain or discomfort on exertion that typically goes away with rest. The condition can result from partially blocked heart arteries or decreased flexibility of the cardiac arteries.
Angina used to be considered a benign symptom in women, added Goldberg, who’s the author of Dr. Nieca Goldberg’s Complete Guide to Women’s Health. “Maybe that’s the thing that sent us on the incorrect pathway that women didn’t have heart disease,”
While risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking, differed from country to country, once the researchers compensated for those risk factors, they found that the prevalence of angina was still higher among women. In fact, the prevalence of angina was 20 percent higher overall among women than men.
Women have a higher prevalence of stable angina pectoris than men, according to a meta-analysis of nearly 25,000 cases in 31 countries, researchers reported in the online issue of Circulation.
Angina is chest pain caused by myocardial ischemia, an inadequate supply of blood-borne oxygen to the heart muscle. Patients with stable angina experience pain after exercise or stress, which disappears when they rest. The causes of stable angina are less understood than the causes of heart attack. But since stable angina is commonly the first sign of symptomatic heart disease, it is vital to find out what causes it.
For the new study, Hemingway and his colleagues collected data from 74 studies involving 401,315 people living in 31 countries, including the United States. The prevalence of angina varied from country to country. Among women, the prevalence varied from 0.73 percent to 14.4 percent, with an average of 6.7 percent. Among men, it varied from 0.76 percent to 15.1 percent, for an average of 5.7 percent, the study found.
Chest pain is a common symptom which can be caused by many different conditions. Some causes of chest pain require prompt medical attention, such as angina, heart attack, or tearing of the aorta. Other causes of chest pain can be evaluated electively, such as spasm of the esophagus, gallbladder attack, or inflammation of the chest wall. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis is vital in providing proper treatment to patients with chest pain.
Angina can be prevented by lifestyle changes (stopping smoking, increasing exercise) and by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. The symptoms of angina can be relieved with medication (such as nitrates or beta-blockers) and by undergoing a coronary revascularisation procedure. The risk of having a heart attack after having experienced angina can be reduced by taking ‘secondary prevention’ medications such as aspirin and lipid lowering drugs. There is no cure for the underlying disease process of atherosclerosis.

Reducing Stress and More With Laughter Yoga – Health Benefits of Yoga
Reducing Stress and More With Laughter Yoga – Health Benefits of Yoga
There are different kinds of health benefits of yoga. Usually, the benefits received from a type of yoga depend on the kind of yoga a person is practicing. One of the kinds of yoga that is gaining in popularity thanks to its health benefits is laughter yoga.
It is said that children laugh around 400 times each day. Anyone who has been around children know they are typically carefree and full of energy. On the other hand, studies have shown that adults laugh only about 15 times a day on average.
Because adults must deal with more stress, it is understandable that they laugh less. But, one of the key points of laughter yoga is that the more a person laughs, the better they will be able to reduce the stress they feel.
In addition to reducing stress, laughter yoga is also said to be able to boost a person’s immune system, strengthen his or her heart and improve overall circulation. A person who wants to try out this kind of yoga to improve his or her health can try the following:
* Find a class – Laughter yoga is usually most effective when it is done as part of a group, rather than a person doing it on her own. Because laughter yoga includes more than just laughing, an experienced yogi can help a person get the most health benefits.
* Get ready – Just like any other form of yoga, a person who hopes to truly be able to receive some health benefits of yoga that focuses on laughing must be able to take the time to warm up. When warming up, a person should clap twice, saying “Ho, Ho.” Then, he or she should clap three times while saying, “Ha, Ha, Ha.”
* Breathing is vital – Breathing is vital in any kind of yoga. In laugh yoga, a person can breathe deeply by drawing in a large breath through his or her nose that immerses his or her lungs. Hold the breath for about 10 seconds, and then slowly exhale. Pay attention to the way the air leaves the lungs. This process should be repeated three times.
* Laugh – This is simpler said than done. The fact is that a person who is not comfortable acting “silly” in a group may need some time to get used to this kind of yoga. The best way to get used to doing this yoga is to realize that everybody else looks just as silly. A person should start the laughing by raising his or her arms in the air and laughing heartily as he or she throws his or head back. Use the other people in the group. People can shake hands, nod, wave and laugh at each other.
* Learn to laugh silently – Laugh yoga does not simply focus on the noises a person makes. Rather, it focuses on the way a body functions as it laughs. Laughing silently can allow a person to get a excellent abdominal workout, It can also allow a person to work out his or her facial muscles.
If a person has participated in yoga for years, he or she must remember that laughing yoga does not replace all of the health benefits of yoga that has been previously been practiced. A person who is looking to stay flexible will likely want to continue to do other types of yoga.

Clear Vision Through More Effective Daydreaming – Really
Clear Vision Through More Effective Daydreaming – Really
Like any other muscle in our bodies, the eye muscle has its own unique qualities and peculiarities, and we must both know those and mange those appropriately if we are to maximize its effectiveness. There are many people in the vision field who spend a significant amount of time on how to improve eyesight, and not nearly enough time on limiting or completely eliminating the things which stand in the way of natural vision correction.
Lets face it, we all have daydreamed, and if you are honest with yourself, will admit that you still probably daydream regularly. What is not quite so apparent to all of you daydreamers, is specifically what is happening to the eye muscles as you are daydreaming. Although there are much more complex medical terms to describe the process, they are often so hard to know that most either don’t take the time to learn more about them, or the ones who do, cannot really know exactly what they are attempting to teach.
In simple terms, this is the explanation. When you are daydreaming with your eyes open, you are, whether conscious of it or not, asking your eyes to focus on two different images at the same time. Just as the eyes send a message to the brain containing the images that are entering through the eyes,, the brain also sends a message to the eyes on what the brain believes the eyes are focusing on. A simple example of this is the student who is sitting in that algebra class staring at the blackboard, but daydreaming about riding their snowboard on some gorgeous Colorado mountain. That student is, in effect, straining their eye muscle to focus on both images, the blackboard filled with Algebra equations, and the terrain park that he or she is about to conquer on their snowboard. Although we are not aware of what is happening, clear vision habits do not include focusing on multiple, non-related images at the same time.
So can we still daydream, yet continue to realize the ongoing benefits of natural vision correction? The answer is yes, as long as we make it a point to close our eyes when daydreaming. Of course this might cut down on our daydreaming, but it will also contribute significantly to our ability to eliminate our glasses or contacts, or even to cancel that Lasik surgery that you may have been plotting. Remember that every step you take down the natural path is a step toward healing and strengthening the eye muscle permanently, and not just a temporary fix until you need that stronger prescription or even Lasik Surgery. I continue to wite and speak about this because far too many people are aware of just how simple and effective natural vision correctin really is.
You can start down the road to clear vision without glasses, contacts, or Lasik right now; you owe it to yourself to check it out.
Joel Sherman has been an advocate of natural vision improvement since experiencing a less than perfect LASIK result, and was able to restore his vision naturally and more effectively utilizing the techniques he studies and writes about frequently.
